Welcome to Broken Words. This site is intended as an online resource for disabled individuals who are struggling to earn income again. As it grows, you will find articles relating to disabled employment resources, self-employment, and specific steps to become a freelance writer and make money online. You CAN escape the disability poverty trap. You CAN earn income online and make a genuinely positive contribution again. I want to help.

Like many, I struggled years to find employment that accommodated my disability. I tried repeatedly to return to the 9-5 work world, but found I simply wasn’t able to manage my condition in that environment. Desperate to regain independence, I turned to the internet and searched for years to find a legitimate source of income.

My efforts to earn income online went unrewarded so long, I’d lost hope. I had tried surveys, but that only led to spam and unwanted magazine subscriptions. I experienced some success with original art, but I found the investment required to earn any real money was beyond my reach. I even submitted original writing to content banks, but my work just sat there. Disappointment and depression took hold of my life.

When I first became disabled, I never imagined that it would become my way of life. I had always considered it temporary assistance to help me survive while I figured out Plan-B. I was beginning to sense that there was no Plan-B that would work for me. The idea of ‘surviving’ on public assistance for the rest of my life made me feel worthless and hopeless. I figured there was nothing left but prayer, so I prayed… a lot. Then it happened.

On a dark spring evening, when my spirits were at their lowest, I received an email that literally changed my life. An online content bank had written to notify me they had sold one of my articles. It was a $10 sale for usage rights of a piece that had been sitting for several months. Nothing to write home about, but somehow it parted the dark clouds that hovered overhead.

Encouraged and inspired by the sale, I began to research freelancing and how to make money online through writing. I didn’t have a degree or any professional experience, so I knew I would need all the tips I could find. If it was possible for me to make a living through writing, I was going to find the way to do it. And I did.

Within a few days my research brought me to an online forum where women were exchanging writing tips. I found eHow mentioned over and over again as a way these ladies earn income online. I immediately went to investigate and I’m glad I did.

eHow has been a great source of information, socialization, and earnings for me. The information provided by fellow writers, though scattered, helped me create a continuously growing source of money online. Unexpectedly, my networking on eHow has led to private writing jobs, additional projects, and a world of writing wealth opportunities I simply don’t have the time to explore.

I don’t have a degree. I didn’t have any professional experience when I started. Still, I have been successful at generating income online that I can be proud of.

I hope to make others aware of the opportunity that exists for them and to provide tips and insight that might help them along their journey.
